Actually I was refering to a completely different video with another Chinese gymnast (not Fan Ye). It was a video taken at a gymnastics meet (might have been the worlds) and the commentators were talking about a Chinese gymnast on the beam. They mentioned that the gymnast was training hard to support her mother and brothers.

  9. heindrich1988 Says:

errr I might be wrong but wasn’t she referring to ‘Fan Ye jie jie’… its common for Chinese people to call their friends brothers or sisters… Fan Ye is a hero in that town, so the little girl was saying she wanted to emulate her hero, and calling her ‘Elder sister Fan Ye’ is both a term of endearment and also respect.

  10. engbur Says:

thanks, that was very helpful. i think that gymnast was from a rural area that might be sparsely populated :)

  11. xingfenzhen Says:

of course you can, if the following conditions apply:
-You don’t need Gov’t housing, single child families takes them all. (doesn’t not apply after 1998, but it is THE reason why I’m the only child.)

-You’re member of a minority group
-you’re only child and your spouse is only child and you don’t live in Henan province
-you a farmer living certain provinces that have 2 child rural polices.
-you live in sparsely populated area of china
    -your local authorities don’t care.
    -you’re having twins

  12. quelita28 Says:

Did she live in the natinal training center ?Was she also taken away from her parents to train? What did her parents say about her training?

  13. singergirl71 Says:

i think you can pay to have more

  14. engbur Says:

interestingly enough, there was a gymnast on another video and the commentators mentioned that the gymnast was hoping to do well so that she could help her family and they mentioned that she had brothers. so i guess the not everyone follows the one-child policy

  15. amaryllisquartz Says:

also, in china u r only allowed one child so some of those girls were probably adopted by the gym and trained since they could walk.

  19. girlyyayi Says:

i feel so bad for the little girl thats crying in 2:26

  20. JessicaSweden Says:

simply because they are not allowed stop. many of them come from poor families and they do this to not end up like their parents - in industries. they simply do this for their families and to try get a better life than their parents, and hopefully be able to give them a better life aswell. theres a huge pressure on these kids.
